In 2002, Chelsea Lighting Design was engaged by a prominent Indian businessman to work on his family residence on Malabar Hill, Mumbai.

Malabar Hill is a highly prestigious residential area on the highest point in southern Mumbai and the apartment on the fifth and sixth floors, with panaramic views over the bay, underwent extensive refurbishment.  Although essentially modern in its interior architecture it had many inherent traditional decorative elements.

It was to become home to a collection of both antique and contemporary works of art and the extensive use of existing marble on walls and floors, together with high ceilings and galleried areas, presented a considerable installation challenge.

The design work was carried out by Chelsea Lighting Design in London, with occasional visits to Mumbai and was implemented through the client's representative on site using local tradesmen. The standard of workmanship was high and the use of local knowledge, working methods and traditional skills overcame many of the inherent difficulties associated with the existing site.

The proposals included a sophisticated lighting management system and specialist techniques, including fibre optics incorporated into the delicate marble detailing to illuminate antique artefacts and sculpture.

The major works were completed during 2007.
