Chelsea Lighting Design News Updates http://www.chelsealightingdesign.co.uk/news.php Latest news from Chelsea Lighting Design Wed, 17 Dec 2008 19:29:01 GMT Bright Futures
Chelsea Lighting Design has created a blog page to showcase new and innovative designers and their ideas. Many young designers emerge from college or university on a high, with energy, ideas and expectations, only to confront the challenge of commercial reality. We believe that it is important to help to sustain this energy and freedom of expression.

We are attempting in this page to bring their talents to a wider and more diverse market in the hope of creating the opportunity for worthwhile connections.

The page is still under development and the facility to add images is limited currently but we are aiming, in the near future, to include links to designers and feature examples of their work.

Although our main interest is lighting, a visit to the various websites will give an insight into the diversity of their talent, products and means of expression through a wide range of materials and applications.

Joe Worden

Joe is a 22 year old designer who graduated from Sheffield Hallam University in June 2008. He has already had an interesting few months, being featured in several design magazines and the BBC and was featured in the New Designers Exhibition 2008 in London.

This success secured him an internship at the studio of the highly acclaimed young designer Paul Cocksedge, also a graduate from Sheffield Hallam who went on to study at the RCA under Ron Arad.

Joe has a passion for creating new and original design ideas and experimenting with different techniques and materials. Each of his pieces is finished by hand, using skills developed during his studies in furniture and product design.

He is currently engaged on freelance design work but is hoping for his first full time design appointment and an opportunity to put some of his products into production.

'Blue Light Chair' [illustrated]

The Blue Light Chair is made from a single piece of acrylic, bent by hand to precise angles, to create a stable sitting platform. L.E.D's illuminate the chair from within and in low light create an amazing result.

'N-ice'

N-ice is a mood light object made from re-cycled glass. The glass sits behind a layer of clear acrylic and is backlit with 80 colour change L.E.D's. The glass particles break up the lines of the L.E.D's giving an effect of crushed ice. The entire light is encased within a hand crafted wooden frame.

For more information contact us via our website or contact Joe at xeronyon@hotmail.com or visit his website at www.joeworden.co.uk

Lucy Fergus - 're-silicone'

Lucy studied at Central St Martins as a materials-led designer with a background in woven textiles and a passion for industrial materials. She founded her company 're-silicone' in 2007 and as the name suggests, the company centres around the production of bespoke eco-conscious products made from re-used rubber silicone, a waste product from various industrial production processes.

Her lighting products use this material to form organic shapes and forms with a pleasing tactile quality and with LED light sources within to give a soft ambient effect.

Details of an LED light object by Lucy Fergus called RHIZOSTOME can be found in our 'PRODUCTS' section and an example is currently on display in our showroom. RHIZOSTOME is available in various lengths up to 3metres and may be used indoors or outside.

[RHIZOSTOME refers to a type of jellyfish usually found in the Mediterranean and is derived from the Greek words rhiza, meaning root and stoma, meaning mouth.]

NEWS UPDATE

Re-silicone had its television debut on Friday 28th November on the BBC 2 'Blast' programme in which they looked at how Lucy Fergus and two other young entrepreneurs got into business so early in life. They reveal how they set up on their own and the attributes needed to become a success.

For more information contact us via our website or contact Lucy at info@re-silicone.co.uk or visit her website at www.re-silicone.co.uk

Demelza Hill - Product Designer

Demelza studied art foundation at Kingston University followed by a 3D design course at the University of Brighton.

Her design interests lie in the interaction between users and products and the exploration of materials and new applications.

Her Reveal Light is a good example of these principals in action.A sculptural indoor light requires the user to alter the amount of light by 'unpeeling' a skin enclosing the light source, just like peeling an orange. As the skin is unzipped it spirals to the floor and more of the light is released.

A new fitting Chandelier is an example of the interest in sustainable products. It is a pendant inspired by the waste plastic drinking containers left over from parties and events and is created from this re-cycled material.

For more information contact us via our website or contact Demelza at mail@demelzahill.com or visit her website at www.demelzahill.com
http://www.chelsealightingdesign.co.uk/news.php?id=29 http://www.chelsealightingdesign.co.uk/news.php?id=29 Sun, 26 Oct 2008 14:13:33 GMT Light + Building, Frankfurt 2008

Chelsea Lighting Design visits Light + Building at Frankfurt, 2008

Frankfurt Fair once again lived up to its reputation as the most comprehensive and extensive showcase for the leading producers of lighting and lighting technology, certainly in Europe if not world-wide.

Gone is the parochial dominance of the earlier fairs at Hanover. This year there appeared to be a positive attempt to introduce an improved mix and diversity of manufacturers and products, resulting in a more stimulating experience overall.

This is possibly also something to do with the fact that lighting is on the threshold of some radical changes and developments, brought about by the coming together of two factors; the aims towards global energy saving and new advances in lamp and luminaire technology. Not since the introduction of fluorescent lighting, almost seventy years ago, has there been both incentive and the means to provide.

Judging by the proliferation of products now using LED technology and the levels of commitment and investment in this area, it looks as though we are looking at the future potential for many lighting solutions. What is still uncertain is the level to which this form of lighting can be developed before it achieves truly viable performance and affordability for everyday use. Nevertheless, the application of innovative thought to this relatively new use of a technology that has been around for some time, seems to have added a new and welcome impetus to the lighting industry.

It is anticipated for example that within 8 to 12 months a 4watt LED lightsource will have an output equivalent to that of a 50W tungsten halogen lamp and with an estimated life of up to 100,000 hours.

What else is new ?

In Designer lighting, Artemide won the prestigious Reddot Award for the spectacular "Mercury" suspension lamp by British [Welsh born] designer Ross Lovegrove.

Amongst others, International Forum [iF] Product Design awards went to two Brazilian companies Lumini for the innovative use of an adjustable reflector within a pendant suspension fitting to control the direction and intensity of the light, and Light Design a wall light with a simple aluminium curved reflector. German company Oligo received an award for an innovative adjustable height pendant incorporating an array of LED,s in a small circular polished aluminium disc that would be at home in either residential or commercial applications.

Grand scale lighting products that take on an architectural presence of their own are becoming more popular. Examples such as the Fontana Arte "Avico" pendant and the Prandina "Biluna" floor or table lamp use simple sculptural forms filled with light. Tre Ci Luce won a Design Plus award for the "Opera" range of pendant and ceiling fittings, for direct and indirect lighting, with a body constructed in wood and up to 180cm in diameter.

There was an interesting selection of task lights. Some were upgraded versions using new technology such as the Luceplan "Berenice" with LED,s and their "Fortebraccia" with a new tactile ‘soft-touch’ polymer finish. Metalarte introduced the "Mamba" a wall mounted or floor standing task light with a flexible stem and using LED lightsources. The minimalist and elegant "Line Z XL" desk lamp by Nimbus Group has a profile of only 5mm but has a wide spread of light, made possible by LED technology.

Awards were also given for the imaginative use of materials, such as the slim "Cohiba" linear suspension light by Studio Benjamin Hopf made with hand sown leather. The use of re-cycled or ‘eco’ materials also generated imaginative design solutions. Notable amongst these were lighting fittings made from discarded silk cocoons and nest like shades woven from rattan and tree bark.

Architectural lighting saw trends towards increased integration of lighting within architecture. Of particular interest was a new modular system by Luceplan designed to be highly flexible in that modular sections and optics are interchangeable within minimal recessed profiles.

Lighting for use Outdoors introduced several new ‘inside/outside’ products based on familiar items such as the Luceplan "Grande Costanza" now available in an outdoor version. Fontana Arte continued the theme with "Amax" their version of an outdoor standard lamp. Colour and effects also featured widely as in the Fontana Arte bollard "Chips" using a combination of LED’s and coloured inserts and "Riddle" a cast aluminium sphere with perforations by Troll that creates a random ‘explosion’ of light patterns on its surroundings. Luceplan have upgraded their "Sky" fitting in an LED version with or without an integral solar panel and re-chargeable battery operation for a wire free installation.

Other new products of note included the new version of Lutron’s "Grafik Eye QS" incorporating many new features, including window blind controls, an astronomical time clock and energy saving indicator, available in the next few months. Philips announced the 33% increase in sales of ‘green’ products and was awarded an iF product design award for the "EcoClassic50" lamp offering a 50% energy saving with an output and performance similar to halogen, instant start and dimmable.

If not already featured, we hope to be featuring most of these products in the New Products section of our website as soon as possible.
http://www.chelsealightingdesign.co.uk/news.php?id=21 http://www.chelsealightingdesign.co.uk/news.php?id=21 Sat, 25 Oct 2008 13:15:41 GMT Lighting and Design events
A calendar of national and international lighting and design events.

Berlin im Licht - Berlin, Germany

Start date June 2008

Finish date 1st February 2009

Venue Stadtmuseum, Berlin

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the "Märkische Museum", Stadtmuseum Berlin stages a special exhibition with the topic "Berlin im Licht" in the museum building, that was opened 1908.

INTERIEUR 08 - Kortrijk, Belgium

Start date 17th October 2008

Finish date 21st October 2008

Times

Venue Kortrijk Xpo, Kortrijk, Belgium

The 21st Edition of one of Europes best Residential Interior Design shows with a series of lectures, debates and featuring the "Young Designers Fair" over a ten day period.

www.interieur.be

Interiors 2009 - Birmingham, UK

Start date 18th January 2009

Finish date 21st January 2009

Times TBC

Venue Hall 1-9 & Pavilion, NEC Birmingham

www.interiorsbirmingham.com

The ARC Show - London, UK

Start date 4th February 2009

Finish date 5th February 2009

Times Wednesday 4th 11.00 - 21.00 Thursday 5th 11.00 - 17.00

Venue Earls Court Two

Moving from the Business Design Centre in Islington to the new venue for 2009. This is a meeting place for architects, designers and specifiers to see new products from key manufacturers and suppliers.

TRADE EVENT ONLY

www.thearcshow.com

Northern Light Fair 2009 - Stockholm, Sweden

Start date 4th February 2009

Finish date 8th February 2009

Times TBC

Venue Stockholm

The Stockholm Furniture Fair and Northern Light Fair is the largest trade fair for Nordic design and the week of the fair is also designated "Stockholm Design Week".

www.furniture.stofair.se

Lighting Fair 2009 - Tokyo, Japan

Start date 3rd March 2009

Finish date 6th March 2009

Times TBC

Venue Tokyo International Exhibition Centre

Euroluce 2009 - Milan, Italy

Start date 22nd April 2009

Finish date 27th April 2009

Times TBC

Venue Firground, Rho, Milan

Lightfair International 2009 - New York, USA

Start date 5th May 2009

Finish date 7th May 2009

Times TBC

Venue Jacob K. Incandescent sources, and halogen sources in particular, although less efficient are good at creating accent and directional lighting to bring out texture and form and are dimmable. LED sources, a relatively new application in lighting terms are highly efficient and are rapidly becoming a viable alternative for both general and accent lighting applications.

The solution was to use a combination of sources such as the Philips "MASTER Classic" halogen lamps and "MASTERLED"s in parts of the hotel in which it was important to retain the quality of light and the atmosphere created. [Compact] fluorescent or LED sources were used elsewhere to maximise energy savings and minimise maintenance programmes.

Based on an annual electricity bill of 4 million euro, 25% of this being consumed by lighting, Accor Hotels Nederland anticipate an annual saving of 30%, simply by removing all conventional "incandescent" lamps.
http://www.chelsealightingdesign.co.uk/news.php?id=27 http://www.chelsealightingdesign.co.uk/news.php?id=27 Wed, 15 Oct 2008 14:53:55 GMT Chelsea Lighting supports Earth Hour
Residents and businesses are being urged to join and pledge their support for "Earth Hour 2009"

Millions of people around the world are invited to join major cities as Earth Hour follows time zones around the globe with country after country switching off non-essential lights and electrical appliances, starting in Sydney, Australia where the first Earth Hour event took place in 2007. Lights at Sydney's iconic Opera House and Harbour Bridge were switched off along with lights in many high-rise office blocks and restaurants around Australia.

In 2008 as many as 50 million people switched off lights and televisions around the world to highlight awareness of the fight against climate change, with around 370 towns and cities in more than 35 countries taking part in the event.

"The event is about more than one night", says Andy Ridley, executive director of Earth Hour. "It is about inspiring people to make daily changes that will help in the ultimate goal of reducing global emissions by 5 per cent.

Earth Hour will take place in the U.K. on Saturday 28th March 2009, starting at 8.30 p.m.

Are you aware of this annual event taking place? If not and therefore did not participate last time, you could still make a lasting contribution by considering changes to everyday habits. Leave unecessary lights and appliances switched off when not in use or install simple devices such as timers or sensors.

www.earthhour.org
http://www.chelsealightingdesign.co.uk/news.php?id=20 http://www.chelsealightingdesign.co.uk/news.php?id=20 Tue, 14 Oct 2008 13:48:23 GMT In our area
If you are planning a visit to Chelsea Lighting Design, we thought it may be useful for you to know of other places of interest and events in our immediate area. The new Saatchi Gallery, historic Royal Hospital, Chelsea Physic Garden and the National Army Museum are all within a few minutes walk.

PLACES OF INTEREST

The Saatchi Gallery [10 minutes walk]

The new Saatchi Gallery opened in a blaze of publicity on 9th October 2008 in the former Duke of York's Headquarters at the Sloane Square end of Kings Road.

With its imposing portico of doric columns, this was the former 'Royal Military Asylum for the Children of Soldiers' of the Regular Army' built 1801-3 in the reign of George III, by architect John Sanders. It is built on the site of the manor house that had previously been the seat of the Cadogan family. John Sanders was a pupil of John Soane and was later to become famous as the architect of the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst in 1811.

Similar in detail to Sir Christopher Wen's Royal Hospital close by, the building was listed as of architectural and historic interest, 'Grade II' in 1967.

In 1909 the Territorials made it their headquarters for Greater London and the parade ground is often used as a playing field by boys from Hill House prep school.

In this fine historic building the maze of interior spaces has been stripped away to reveal the underlying geometry and create 15 spacious new galleries on three floors. They are white, sparely finished and well lit, with extensive use of top-lighting providing a uniform background with accent lighting pushing through. The result is bright and functional, with generous and well-proportioned spaces effectively understated to display the artwork in a pure way, without distraction or interference.

It promises to be a huge and permanent success and a place where anyone can see, experience and debate the emergence of new artistic ideas, for free.

New Art from China is at the Saatchi Gallery, Duke of York's Barracks, Kings Road, SW3 until 18 January,2009.

Open daily 10am-6pm. Information: 020 7823 2363

www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk Admission Free

Royal Hospital [5 minutes walk]

Founded by King Charles II and intended for the 'succour and relief of veterans broken by age and war', the Royal Hospital, with its Grade 1 listed buildings, still serves its original purpose.

Designed by Sir Christopher Wren and completed in 1692, the Royal Hospital has changed little in its long history. From its distinctive red brick exterior and extensive grounds to its beautifully designed interiors, the Royal Hospital remains a remarkable and historic site.

The construction of the new infirmary for the Pensioners is a statement of the intention to continue to further its role well into the 21st century.

The Royal Hospital has an operational Post Office, open to the public Monday to Friday. They are cheap enough after all, despite the fact that you had probably changed one only a few weeks before.

Next time your supply runs out however, consider replacing your ordinary bulbs by ones that look very much the same but are packed with features that will help cut your energy consumption by up to half, give a better quality of light and have a considerably longer life.

The new Philips MASTERClassic is an incandescent halogen source, not fluorescent, and uses integral electronics to give improved lighting quality that is dimmable, uses 50% less energy for an equivalent light output and lasts three times longer. The initial purchase price is higher but reduced energy consumption and re-lamping costs mean attractive overall annual savings that will increase relative to the relentless rise in energy costs.

As part of the "Big Switch" initiative, the National Trust is committed to replacing all of its older energy inefficient lamps in its historic buildings. Keen to adopt the latest innovations the Philips MASTERClassic lamps were ideal for this first step in the National Trust's environmental journey. It offered energy saving while retaining the "sparkle" and dimming capabilities of the incandescent light source.

By making this switch the National Trust will already have saved a staggering 2223 tonnes of CO2 emissions

Osram have a similar product in their 'Energy Saver CLASSIC' range, again using a halogen source and providing a comparitive 30% energy saving with double the rated lamp life.

Both the award winning * MASTERClassic range and the Osram CLASSIC ranges are an eco-friendly and user-friendly alternative to the inevitable obsolescence of the standard GLS lamp. Issues of concern to domestic users include - amount of light, warm-up time, ability to dim, flicker, colour, appearance and rendition, lamp life, degree of sparkle, availability of suitable luminaires [and shades] and cost.

Information from manufacturers does indicate that many of the technical issues could be addressed and that lamps are currently under development that will meet most of the characteristics of tungsten filament lamps. While lamps will use various approaches, such as fluorescent, LED or high efficiency filament technologies, they will be more energy efficient than current tungsten filament lamps.

The Society believes that all these new lamps, must be manufactured to remove all the conditions listed above, together with a wide range of suitable luminaires, and should be readily available before existing lamps are withdrawn. It therefore calls on those in the supply chain, lamp and luminaire manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers to ensure that suitable lighting equipment is readily available to the market, to meet timescales for proposed withdrawal of current lamps. "

The Society of Light and Lighting is a professional body for lighting in the UK and is a subsidiary of The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers [CIBSE]

http://www.chelsealightingdesign.co.uk/news.php?id=11 http://www.chelsealightingdesign.co.uk/news.php?id=11
